2.8 Million – The first major Rapp Coin Auction was a complete success!

A spectacular start to the stamp and coin auction in Wil (Switzerland) – stamps under the hammer until 24 November

Record prices for coins at the auction sale of Rapp Auctions in Wil, Switzerland on 22 November: for the start of the worldwide probably most top-selling stamp and coin auction, rare coins and medals with a total value of 2.8 Million Francs were being auctioned; the expected volume of sales has therefore been exceeded by far.

The motto of the auction «Golden Times» is not for nothing: The percentage of gold coins was extraordinary. Many significant coins and medals from the ancient world, the middle ages and the modern age were on offer.

Top prices for single coins and collections
Out of the numerous single items and dozens of valuable coin collections, various numismatic rarities achieved top prices: The Hamburger Portugalöser dated 1578 was sold for CHF 108’000.– whereas and a gold coin from German-New Guinea dated 1895 was worth CHF 38’400.– to his buyer. Especially in demand were the coins of an enthusiastic numismatist, whose Trento collection including over 10’000 coins was sold for CHF 245’000.–.

Modern Sensations

The gold and silver medal of the former Hungarian national soccer team player László Budai II were sold on Tuesday, 22 November at our auction house for CHF 10’800.– each. Budai was a member of the «Golden Eleven», who won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Helsinki 1952 and «only» the silver medal at the World Cup in Bern 1954. In a similar manner, the bidders in the auction room and the internet were fighting for the medals causing spiralling prices. The gold medal was sold to a German bidder in the auction room and the silver medal found its way back to Hungary, bought by a bidder online. Both medals were estimated to achieve a result of approximately CHF 5'000.–. The auctioning of these medals was considered to be a modern sensation.
